Lets Meet Jacob

The ladies at LCPBR asked Jacob what he would like if they reached the major goal of $5,000 to help him out.

Here's the story:

"Anything his heart desired we were going to make happen for him.

You know what Jacob asked for if we reach our $5,000 goal for the month of April?

Hugs.

This sweet little man asked for hugs from those who chose to donate to his cause.

I think we could all learn a thing or two from Jacob.

I asked Jacob’s mother to write a letter so we could get to know both her and her son. She also wanted to reach out to other parents with children that have special needs.

Here’s her letter:

“Let me start by telling you a bit about myself. My name is Belinda. I am a single mom with 2 boys, 15 and 9 years old. My youngest son, Jacob, has a long list of health problems. I knew from early on that something was not “right”. I kept discussing it with his doctor and I was just told that each baby is different and I was being over reactive. Finally, the doctor agreed to do a developmental screening because I begged him to. Jacob failed; big time. I hate to say that this made me happy but I finally knew that there really was something wrong, it wasn’t all in my head and now we could move forward with getting him the help that he needed.
The next few years were very difficult. My husband and I divorced. We moved to a bigger city to have access to better health care and therapies for Jacob. But as difficult as those years were, I wouldn’t change it for the world. When he finally started making progress, Jacob was 6 years old. Up until this time his speech was very limited, had difficulty walking and was developmentally on a 1 year old level. Christmas of that he called me “Mom” for the first time. Words cannot explain how overjoyed I was.

Jacob has continued to make progress since then. Now at age 9 he has progressed to being on a developmental level of about a 4-5 year old but I no longer look at him as a devlopmental number. I see an amazing young person who touches the lives of everyone he meets. He has an imagination that is out of this world and has a true love for life and all things in it.

He has taught me just as much, if not more, than I have taught him. He has taught me to be in the moment; to rejoice in the little things; to see things from a different point of view.

There will be bad days. Days where you will question “Why me” or “Why can’t it just be easy for once”. I do not have a quick fix for these days but I can tell you that you are not alone. We all have these days. There are many days when I question if I am doing a good job or making the right decisions. I have often wondered who decided that I needed to be the parent. But even in those trying times, know that you are loved and that you are not alone.

Your child loves you even if they do not express their feelings in words. When you don’t think you know what you are doing; know that you are brilliant. On days when you are exhausted and do not think you can go any further, look back and see how far you have come. When faced with another up-hill battle, look at your scars as reminders of the battles you have already won. And on days when you feel small and all alone; know that we are here with you helping you along your way.

From the bottom of my heart to you with much love,
Belinda”
